Quick Fishing Update

Fishing on the Salmon River has been tough for the first half of April, Hopefully were over the hump and good days are ahead of us. The flows are still high on the Salmon River but we shouldn't see it any higher hopefully unless we get some rain. Rumors say the hatchery is done collecting eggs and the hatchery has plenty of adult steelhead in it waiting to drop back into the river. The ice on the eastern end Lake Ontario is finally gone and that opens the inshore brown trout fishing.   Guides do get to fish once in a while.

Got Cabin Fever??

Cabin fever starting to set in?? Need a break from tying flies?? Or doing the "Honey Do List?" January has plenty of opportunities for the fly fisherman. Steelhead Are Here But

There are plenty of steelhead in the river, they just don't want to bite like we want them too. The water temp is just too warm for them to act like they should. The plus side, there's a cold front on the way.  Just like there are plenty of fish, there are plenty of fisherman along the banks of the Salmon River. Respect each other's space and don't crowd in on other anglers space and have a enjoyable day fishing, isn't that why were out there???

Fishing Update

Fishing remains slow and everyone has theories to where the fish are or even if we are going to get a decent return of fish this year.  Is it because of the flood in 2010? Low water and lack of eggs at the hatchery in 2011?? The cold winter and colder then normal lake temperatures this year??  Or 60% of last years fish at the hatchery last year were two year olds (this years fish) Or all the above. Only time will tell. As I type this there has been some fish showing up at the mouth staged in front. On the plus side there are some Steelhead in the river, if you try to target them you could be rewarded like Blake here in the picture above.

First Trip of the season

Matt with his first salmon Started my river trips for the season on Sunday and it was pretty slow. We saw more fish going back to the lake at daylight then we saw swimming upstream the rest of the day, which is pretty common this time of the year. If your looking to book Steelhead dates in November I have very few left, don't wait.

LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) – A new public health assessment from the New York State Department of Health warns people to stay away from the soil and sediment near Eighteen mile Creek in Niagara County. Experts say touching and handling the soil around the creek could harm people’s health. The report also offers a stern message for fishermen to avoid eating any fish from the creek.
