Guide Get Away

By |July 9th, 2017|Categories: Uncategorized|Tags: , |

Being a fly fishing guide doesn't allow me to fish very often, so when I can i try to bring one of my daughter's along. Recently I booked a few days up at Lopstick Lodge in Pittsburgh NH for a little father/daughter fishing time. We started out running a few dry dropper rigs thru the pocket water in the upper Connecticut river with good success that evening. The next morning the river was crowded so we rigged up some nymphing rods figuring with all the pressure we'd have better luck with getting down deep smaller nymphs in the pockets. We fished a very popular spot with some success, but I knew we were missing some fish in this run. So I switched over to a couple of mop flies on both rods and we picked up a good number of fish. The crowds there don't stray far from parking lots as walking anywhere can tough with some dense woods and a lot of Bush whacking.  So we decided to get away from the crowds, once we did the fishing went from pretty good to outstanding. Big browns, rainbows, landlock salmon and brook trout all in the same pockets and small runs. Changing over to bigger flies seemed to draw the bigger fish out from under rocks and log jams. We finished up our short stay the next morning with not many people around mostly fishing nymphs again. It was a great time to test out some patterns I had tied before the trip some with good success others were so so, so we'll save them for another time to test out. If you never have fished the upper Connecticut, you should try it out. Lopstick lodge is [...]

Bugs, Bugs and more Bugs

By |May 30th, 2017|Categories: Uncategorized|Tags: , , , , , |

Good hatches of bugs have been coming off just about every stream I have fished this year providing good dry fly action. Early in the morning when there has been no hatches we have been nymphing with good success.  I will be up on the West Branch of the Ausable in Wilmington for the month of June if your looking to get out on the water give me a call (518) 495-2965 or email me at paul@paulsguideservice.com

What’s Going On?

By |July 7th, 2016|Categories: Uncategorized|Tags: , , , , , , , |

It's been a while since I have made a post and now that we are in the dog days of summer it's time to start thinking of fall.  Reports on social media show some kings are being caught on the eastern end of Lake Ontario along with a good number on Steelhead and a few Atlantic's mixed in. We are hoping for a good fall run after the last two being very slow, fingers crossed. With the very dry summer we're having in the northeast and streams running at a trickle, Brookfield and  Flow Management Advisory Team are already taking steps to make sure we have water for the upcoming spawning run.                                                                         Public Notice for Salmon River Due to lower than normal reservoir water levels on the Salmon River (South), Brookfield Renewable has announced the Whitewater Recreation Release scheduled for July 9th – 10th is cancelled. The decision to cancel is based on input from members of the Flow Management Advisory Team (FMAT) regarding the adverse impact that the flow increase would have upon an already low reservoir level and the possible effect upon the ability to sustain spawning season flow requirements later this year. Thank you for your patience during these low water level conditions. Please use caution and wear a personal flotation device when recreating on or near water. Pay close attention to your surroundings and respect all signage, sirens and barriers. Always check water conditions before you recreate. One source is www.h2oline.com. If there are any questions, please [...]

Spring Steelhead

By |March 21st, 2016|Categories: Uncategorized|

Spring has sprung on the Salmon River. Fishing is picking up on the Salmon River, with the mild winter things are a little a head of schedule this year. The hatchery took eggs last week and we are seeing good numbers of dropbacks down river. I have a couple of days still open in April if you are looking to get in on the action this Spring.

Salmon Season

By |August 11th, 2015|Categories: Reports, Uncategorized|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Salmon season is just around the corner. Hopefully we should see a good run based on statistics and hope mother nature is in our favor this fall. A good source was fishing in the Douglaston Salmon Run Sunday and saw a few salmon moving thru. Could we have another year with a early run? If you haven't booked your dates now is the time, I have only a few days open but I have a couple of other guides working for me that may have it open. Paul
